I was unable to recover from the crash. I have since reinstalled from the Xubuntu "alternate" disk and it worked fine. The ubuntu site recommends this for system with less than 128MB such as the one I was installing it on. It worked fine. Perhaps the issues I was having were all due to lack of available memory.
