One further addition:

During boot up, I first get an X.org screen with the NVidia logo. After
that I see the boot messages in text mode for a short while. After that
I get the Low graphics mode message and when I Cancel that message
within a couple of seconds the next thing is KDM. So apparently first
normal boot with Nvidia is tried (and as I see the logo, apparently it
works). Then somehow this is cancelled, the warning appears and when
that is cancelled everything is fine.

I attached the Xorg.0.log.old file that seems to be the result of the
first (failed?) attempt to start the X server. It does have a
'ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log' message so that might be the cause.

server during boot"
