I don't see ubuntu "at fault" per se.  But the error message could have
been more meaningful.  The whole handling could (!) have been smoother.

BTW, what was bad about the sources.list file?  I just thought it was
redundant but I did not think it was broken per se.  Did it violate the
specs?  In that case it would be fairly easy to set up a test for
"broken sources.list" syntax  and improve handling of these kind of
situations.
