Public bug reported: There is a bug in hw/xfree86/modes/xf86Crtc.c preventing dual link DVI. I experienced this issue with an AMD Radeon 4830, but other cards might be affected as well. According to the radeon developers the occurrence of this bug depends on which DVI port of the card is used.
This problem is fixed by applying the patch from http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=8a6ed44a8b2fc5f14729dc54fec17607ced03859 I tested it and it works fine for me.
