Public bug reported: The Luxi fonts look great when unhinted, but they are just ugly when hinted. Maybe there is no hinting data in the font itself and freetype has to do auto-hinting, I do not know.
Since Luxi does not take well to hinting, hinting should be disabled. In any case, Firefox 3.1 beta 2 from upstream binary tarball appears to ignore the GNOME hinting settings, the only way I found to get good looking Luxi fonts in Firefox was to disable the hinting using fontconfig. Fontconfig file attached (drop in /etc/fonts/config.d).
