Thunderbird is still crashing, although I'm not sure if the bug is related to Auto save. I have 4 email accounts in Thunderbird (3 IMAP, 1 POP), two of those are shared mailboxes that update with changes that others make. I have a suspicion that this is contributing to the crashes but can't say how, all I know is that the other people that share the same mailboxes are having the same problem.
