> Did running it in splitscreen mode do something? Yep, sounds like a configuration problem. Look in your ~/.config/monitors.xml and your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to be sure. But you can see by "maximum 2384 x 768" in your xrandr output that you set up your maximum screen height to 768, so no wonder 1680x1050 wouldn't work. See man xrandr and man xorg.conf for more instruction on how to configure X, or if you prefer using GUI config tools, report bugs for improving its behavior against gnome-control-center.
