Thanks for the link Milos.. i followed the instructions and when i run
"run gimp", it starts up and once i reproduce the bug, everything
freezes, i can't hit ctrl-C in the gdb window. i have to go to another
virtual terminal, log in and killall gdb..

when i do that, this is what i get in the debug text file (if you see a line 
with just quotation marks, it means the line above it repeats for around 20 or 
more lines):
