The modifications should be made to /boot/grub/menu.lst
Here is a sed script which worked for me
sed -i -e '/^title.*generic$/ { n; n; s^$^ i8042.reset^ }' -e '/#
defoptions/s^$^ i8042.reset^' /boot/grub/menu.lst
