Michael, language-selector crashes if LANG variable is empty or not set at all in /etc/default/locale or /etc/environment. An issue is that getSystemDefaultLanguage() cant be None. If locale is not defined in configs, probably it was setup from gdm prompt. So if nothing was found, output of 'locale' cmd should be parsed.
