My apologies - I've had another look at those instructions and here are my
findings...

"hal-find-by-capability --capability input | xargs -n1 lshal -u" lists a
few devices that look like they might be the right thing, these are:

 * info.product = 'AT Translated Set 2 keyboard'  (string)
 * info.product = 'Power Button (CM)'  (string)
 * info.product = 'Sony Vaio Keys'  (string)

These correspond to the following (respectively):

 * /dev/input/event1
 * /dev/input/event3
 * /dev/input/event5

I tried using the mute button after attaching to all three of these
devices in order (using "sudo input events <n>", for n=1,3,5), however
none of these register the key press at all.

I then tried acpi_listen and pressing the key. This time the ACPI event
is registered as follows:

sony/hotkey SNC 00000001 00000090
sony/hotkey SNC 00000001 00000010

When I press Fn+F5 (alternate action = brightness down), I get the
following:

sony/hotkey SNC 00000001 00000010
sony/hotkey SNC 00000001 0000003b
