Can you do the following tests:

Try to print (convert to PostScript) the image from other programs
(GIMP, f-spot, gqview, ...) or directly to CUPS ("lpr -o scaling=100
<file.png>"). Does the same problem occur?

Install GPL GhostScript ("sudo apt-get install gs-gpl", perhaps you will
need to activate universe in /etc/apt/sources.list) and do

gs-gpl -sDEVICE=x11 <file.ps>

end also

gs-esp -sDEVICE=x11 <file.ps>

When is the file correctly displayed? Try to display also your
dapper.ps.gz and edgy.ps.gz with both GhostScript versions.
