This honestly is distro-specific.  Xandros will leave the old default route and 
just add the one that the VPN tells it to add. The result is that Firefox 
still hits the gateway page that yells at he user to start the vpn 
client..when they already have.

Current behaviour on Ubuntu is to replace the existing route with what the VPN 
server says is the correct route.  This means that if you are trying to get on 
company wireless and need everything to go through the VPN, you're in great 
shape.  If you're remote and only want certain IPs to go through the VPN, I 
believe network manager has an option in the GUI to only use the VPN for 
___________________________ and then you list the IPs.
