It's interesting that Xubuntu worked and Ubuntu didn't, since they're supposed to be pretty much exactly the same at that stage of the installation process.
Can you test with Ubuntu 6.10 and confirm whether this problem persists? Can you also check your Ubuntu installation CD for defects? I see the bug was logged just before the Dapper (6.06) release, did you use a pre- release, or Breezy (5.10) CD for installation?
