I definitely agree with Christopher that this bug has become a sort of basket case where all problems having to do with poor performance are placed. It appears that there are at least 5-6 potentially separate problems all together in here.
I also haven't heard from anyone claiming to be a developer/maintainer in a very long time. Too long. We need to focus this bug, and get some valuable input from development.
