This was a bug in a patch we applied to Metacity to show the desktop in the Alt+Tab switcher.
The problem, as you mentioned, was that more than one desktop was shown even though you could not switch to the different desktop windows. This was fixed in a update to metacity in our PPA[1]. The update is available for both hardy and intrepid, and we are working on getting the patch into Jaunty's metacity.
