If it is the case that you have broken packages that need to be removed,
here is one way to do it:

If you run System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager (to do so
you'll be prompted for your password) you'll see a column on the left
side of the synaptic window which lists All / Broken / Community
Supported / etc.

Click on the Broken line, and the right side of the window will change
to show the list of broken packages. If the list is empty then that's
not what the problem is so ignore this comment.

If there are packages they will be listed with a red mark to the left of
the package name. Right-click on each of these red marks and select
"Mark for Complete Removal" and then click the Apply button along the
top of the window. This should remove the broken packages and the error
you are encountering.
