I downloaded and installed this package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/tex/kile
I tested it with two files that crashed previously, so far it seems to work. However I could not realiably reproduce the crash earlier, so I will go back to working with kile (switched earlier to emacs because of the date loss) and see if it runs stable. Thanks for putting work into this. The problem has really been bugging me.
