Okay, once I had an internet connection (via my last post workaround), I
updated via Synaptic. With the updates, it seems to have fixed the
problem. The default /etc/resolv.conf generated by NetworkManager now
works in connecting me to the internet! Woot!

I don't know what changed to allow this to happen.

** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Fix Released
