A kind Ubuntu hacker in India has made Xft versions of emacs-snapshot packages available via apt:

But seriously, every time I start Emacs I have to double-check the calendar to remind myself what year it is. And it can be fixed just by rebuilding emacs-snapshot with Xft support enabled.
