ehm... I gave it for granted: my laptop's HDD is affected by this bug, in fact, in previous versions of kubuntu I was using the ugly fix. (I started with 7.04 and then upgraded the system up to 8.04.)
Then today, I decided to install 8.04 from scratch and the bug is not there anymore (of course, I haven't reapplied the ugly fix, so the packages now seem to work fine). Laptop mode starts automatically on battery. On battery the cycle counts is more than 100 per hour, is this reasonable?
