Update: I went to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and removed the proprietary fglrx driver, then restarted my computer. glxinfo and glxgears started working again, and told me I had direct rendering. However, turning on compiz gave me a completely white screen, and all sides of the 'cube' were completely white. That's another subject though.
