i am pretty sure if you try as root there will not be any problem ! burning operation is a typical costly operation( writing to a block devices is slow ) . Also it's kinda real time operation as buffers needs to be flushed immediately(reading from the file and flushing/burning to a cd)so the process requires higher priority at any cost which is best done by a process started by root .
