Same type of problem here (on Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid with KDE 4.1.4, backports enabled) : Adept manager shows me an update for phonon-backend-xine (version 4:4.1.4-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 installed, version 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 available), but if I try to install it, nearly all of my KDE apps are proposed for removal !!! No problem with phonon/libphonon4/phonon-backend-gstreamer packages (installed version for all : 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1).
