The reason behind this is that the package 'dmraid' is not included in the installer cd. This has been wishlisted for awhile now, but for some reason, the installer team wishes to make you do an 'apt-get install dmraid' if you want software RAID support. That is, if you have networking capability at that moment. Honestly, I think this is pretty stupid. It's just an issue of laziness.
