You mention you still experience issues even if you boot back into the
previously working 2.6.27-7 kernel, this would seem to then indicate
that it was one of the other 244 updates you pulled in that is likely
causing this regression and not the kernel.  Seems related to xorg.
Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log .
