Did a clean wipe and install of Ubuntu, and then followed your instructions. Now I am running 0.9.2-CVS (Using KDE 3.5.10). I get a little further - now after a FILE/OPEN the status bar goes as far as "Fixing Transactions", and then goes away as I described.
Any thoughts?...
