My problems seem to be solved by upgrading pulseaudio to ver.
0.9.14-0ubuntu4~intrepid1 from the next-media personal package archive
(https://launchpad.net/~next-media/+archive/ppa).  A lot of other
packages were upgraded at the same time.

However, I get the following message in /var/log/messages:

pulseaudio[5570]: module-alsa-source.c: Your kernel driver is broken: it
reports a volume range from 18.00 dB to 18.00 dB which makes no sense.

That doesn't seem to have an effect on performance.
