thanks. Unfortunately not so useful at I was hoping this would be fixed in 2.6.27 (and thus my X would become usable again).
2.6.28 has the Graphical Execution Manager (GEM) and portions of Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) which cause problems with X, whereas 2.6.27 does not. Hence the query for sound modules (which was all that was not working).
