In my report "Bug 311448" I mention the following:

Ubuntu 8.04 provides in wireless connection settings the following choices for
WEP key:
WEP 128 bit passphrase
WEP 64/128 bit Hex
WEP 64/128 bit ASCII
However, Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't have ASCII choice, just Hex and Passphrase. I
don't know the difference between passphrase and ASCII and I am not very
interested in it. When I shifted from 8.04 to 8.10 I had real headache to
connect to the wireless access point. Finally I used 8.04 to find the
appropriate hexadecimal value for the known ASCII key and than I connected in
8.10 using this hexadecimal value. That's not very straightforward solution. :)"

Than Chris Crisafulli marked it as the duplicate as the current bug.
