I also have an averatec 3280 that had this problem when installing
intrepid. I installed it anyway from the desktop cd in safe graphics
mode.

After reading <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/299631">bug #299631</a>, I compiled
openchrome from svn as described <a
href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome";>here</a> and that
solved the X freeze (at least so far). I can also shut down without the
screen flashing etc.
