Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde
Hi I know Feisty is still very much pre-release software. However in the interests of testing I thought I should share my experiences. First let me explain the conditions of my install so that potentially they can be recreated. I installed Feisty initially on my Intel Core Duo laptop with 1GB of RAM and 100GB hard drive. Because of my experiences over the years I have learned that if I ever want to compile my own software (which I occasionally do when I can't find a binary in the repositories) it is a good idea to install as many development libraries as possible, otherwise (a bit like missing dll's in Windows) it is likely you are always going to encounter a missing library at some point or other. I also like to have a full and complete working KDE environment - so I will tend to install everything related to KDE on the repositories except unneeded language packs and debug libraries. Having done this since much of my interest is in multi media - I will also tend to install as many codecs and multi media type packages as possible too. However having fulfilled all of these conditions, it seems that KDE has become very unresponsive. For example when starting up it can take between 5 and 7 minutes to go from the KDE login screen until I finally reach the desktop. Emptying the recycle bin takes an age - maybe 7 minutes plus, even if there is only one single small text file in it. Doing "sudo knoqueror" (or "kdesu konqueror") will bring up a konqueror Window - but it will often take an age to get a full listing of a directory's contents (for example opening up the / directory as su can cause konqueror to take between 5 and 10 minutes to show the full contents of the root folder). Smaller folders are similarly affected. (Although they are less so as an ordinary user). I also cannot reliably cleanly log out of a KDE session and log back in. If I try this will cause my attempt to log back into KDE again to hang once more for an unbearably long time. Usually this does sort itself out and I do eventually get to my desktop (again after 5+ minutes) but KDE behaves very sluggishly and unresponsively - almost as though all of my laptop's memory (1GB) was being used up and KDE was struggling to gain access to enough resources to allow me to do anything very useful with it. This is resolved somewhat however, if instead of simply logging out and back in again, I choose to reboot instead. Then I can reliably enter a KDE session - although again only with all of the issues I have described above. I have not installed any KDE 4x packages my KDE version is 3.5.5 ** Affects: meta-kde (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- KDE in Feisty Fawn is Very Unstable/Unresponsive https://launchpad.net/bugs/75968 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
