Okay, found something interesting. With edgy (and I assume this is the same with feisty), when I shutdown straight from KDE without logging out to KDM, the Usplash image shows up for a second before going black, then reappearing during the shutdown splash refresh (where the meter goes to 0, then goes back to having about 25% filled and then continues). However, I found that if I kill the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace after shutting down, but *before* the switch to Usplash, the shutdown theme is shown in it's entirety without going black. Can anybody else who has this problem confirms that this happens on their machine, and it's not just a fluke on my machine.
