Hmm, I just tried booting the 64-bit Intrepid (8.04.1) ISO (on a USB drive); the same thing happens there. I believe there must be something wrong with the newer versions of the driver (in this case, the just- released Catalyst 9.1). Some time this weekend, I can make a spare full-install of Intrepid to be sure it's not just a header mismatch issue. I'll also be willing to try the 32-bit version, and grab a stacktrace from each. With a fresh install, the amdpcsb is most likely not a factor.
