I run a relatively new Acer Aspire 5520 and this bug stills affects it
with Ubuntu 8.10 and latest kernel.

The fix on the init.d scripts took out the Unable to Iterate IDE devices but 
the powering off is still not happening.
In my case hitting any key will power off the system but it won't by default. 

Will look into the SND_HDA driver as it might be the one responsible.
