Me fool! I've just read my own bug submission and I've just realized I have an extra zero in
APT::Cache-Limit 900000000; (when I configured APT I meant to give it 90M of RAM, not 900M...). Now I assume that APT sometimes fails to allocate 900M of RAM on a system with 2GB, because it depends on how much free RAM the system has. This would explain why the problem is not (easily) reproducible, right?
