Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Network Manager 0.7 does not allow me to use PPP dial-up connections,
and it also won't let me start VPN service on a PPP dial-up I ran with
wvdial.

If I use a cellular broadband card which is detected by Network Manager,
then there are no problems and Network Manager works out of the box, but
starting with version 0.7 Network Manager does not let me use any other
PPP type connections, for example - dial-up through a bluetooth cellular
modem.

If I set up my PPP connection manually (using wvdial), I can't use
Network Manager's VPN service as it is grayed out unless Network Manager
controls an interface which is up (which it can't as it doesn't support
it).

One way to fix this is to allow Network Manager to control ad-hoc PPP
devices - like it did in version 0.6, then I could configure it to
control my bluetooth phone. Another way would be to let VPN service be
invoked even if Network Manager can't detect an active network
connection.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
