I've been searching around but can't find an exact match. Maybe nobody actually
figured what was happening.
I have video play back problems... started getting worse on the latest Ubuntu
8.10 (Intrepid) updates.
The problem looks like the color bits of the video are displaced, making a
green row on the left and all the red colors displaced to the right. Only
happens with certain videos, mostly xvid.
I'm using an nVidia GeForce 8600GT with the Ubuntu proprietary driver 177.

The XINE tip didnt help me, but gave me the idea to try other video outputs....
X11 works fine... OpenGL works too. Xv is the buggy one.
Never had this problem on my notebook with ATI video drivers.

Hope it helps someone outt here.
