Actually, I've misunderstood the 'expand messages' tag. (It shows the messages at the base of the application when you click on them, and is not related to whether the messages in the timeline are truncated or otherwise.
The bug stands, however. Messages are initially truncated on application load and are only displayed in full after the timeline reloads (either manually or automatically).
