Restart was successful. Kernel is correctly installed and it seems my modifications to menu.lst were ok (uname -r gives "2.6.27-11-generic")
Some notes that might be interesting: - Like the reporter, I'm using ubuntu 8.10 in french language. I don't know if it is relevant or only a coincidence. - Output logs are in french. Sorry for non-ascii characters that are completely messed up by launchpad. If you need a translation of some output, please ask. - Unlike the reporter, I'm using a x86_64 (64bit) kernel on an amd. - I removed old kernel 2.6.27-7 (linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic & linux-headers-2.6.27-7).
