I'm definitely still getting the periodic_update()s It's not as frequent (for me) as when I originally logged the bug. It now happens about 5 times a day (working hours). At 5 times a day it's annoying, but not unworkable.
It's horribly annoying if you're doing something like Internet Banking, and you don't notice the link went down, and you click on something and Firefox displays the helpful message "Firefox is in off-line mode", and you don't know if the last submit happened.
