I have switched to Shiretoko (via an Ubuntu PPA) and haven't seen this problem in the newer version.
I would imagine the problem still exists on Firefox 3.0 though. Unfortunately, none of the methods suggested by Leann seemed to point to a way of isolating this I/O problem, so I didn't attempt any.
