It is the intrepid-backports version (http://packages.ubuntu.com /intrepid-backports/gimp), 2.6.1-1ubuntu3 (the official intrepid version) has this issue too. I've the language back installed, though it wouldn't affect this since .desktop translation get populated at build time only.
