Edward can you download the alternate iso here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.10/ when this page loads go down to the section "Alternate Install CD" and select the .iso for your architecture. If you have a standard 32-bit machine you can use: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.10/ubuntu-8.10-alternate-i386.iso .
