I also have a system using the PM96x, and Googleearth has the same troubles.
However, I have a MSI laptop. 
In Kubuntu 8.04 without compiz, Googleearth worked fine.
Kubuntu 8.04 + Compiz shows Googleearth with problems as the screenshot given 
by Biweek
Kubuntu 8.10 + Compiz shows the same problems
Kubuntu 8.10 (Kde 4.10) without compiz shows the same problems (I suspect 
plasma)
Kubuntu 8.10 + https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive gives the 
same problems.

OpenGL screen savers work properly.

Curiously enough, the problems with Googleearth coincide with problems with the 
picture viewer XnView, see attachment:
buttons are not painted, and the pane in which the picture is ordinarily 
displayed is transparant grey.
