Mine experience seems to come close - I do get these freezes, and a hard reset is the only way out. I'm on a fairly old computer with no SATA (still on PATA :) ), RAID or the like. And an AGP-video card (Radeon X800PRO). I'm not using the restricted video-drivers, 'cause the fanspeed seems to be constant (high) in those drivers. Ubuntu 8.10, kernel is 2.6.27-9. The freeze never occured in 8.04.
For me the "trigger" is either using GIMP v2.6.1 or Open Office v2.4 (word processor or spreadsheet). I can't tell what makes it happen, but usually it takes some time for the freeze to occur. The other day I made a fresh reboot, only started Open Office Word Processor and began writing a new document. Nothing fancy - just text with various styles, and about half an hour in, the freeze occured. I remember another time when I had been using the computer all day, and then at some point I started Open Office Word Processor. The dialog for recovering a document was displayed, and the freeze occured right away, before I decided what to do with the recovery-process. Another funny thing, is that if I need to do something quickly, like say resize a picture in GIMP, often I get away with it without the freeze, close down GIMP, and everything is just dandy. No freeze afterwards either. The same goes for Open Office (word processor and spreadsheet). These are the only two programs I use that provokes the freeze. If I stay away from them, the freeze never occurs. Games, both the ones "build in" and more graphically intensive like Urban Terror (http://www.urbanterror.net) never produce a freeze. I'll be glad to provide more information if necessary. I'm pretty n00by linux-wise, so "how" to provide additional information would be appreciated.
