I am running into similar problems using my webcam on my Viewsonic monitor. Attached is the output from 'cheese -vv'. Hope it helps.
BTW, my original tests had the audio *WAYYYY* out of sync from step 1. Later tests, seemed a bit better, but nothing reliable. On my Ubuntu 8.10 system, mplayer plays other .flv files out of sync, but totem plays them just fine.
