I would like to report I suffer the same issue. I have determined that if the SSID is not broadcast, I can never 'autoconnect'. However, if I change the WAP to broadcast the SSID then autoconnect works.
I am unable to determine if the wireless card/chipset makes any difference since I only have the Intel BG2200, but I have tested with multiple WAPs ranging from Cisco Aironet to Netgear consumer level equipment. This problem first occured for me in 8.10 Kubuntu and still exists into KDE4.2 RC1 (4.1.96) installed from repository.
