I'm new to Linux (Ubuntu 64bit) and despite the tinkering required to get it
working, I love it.
My Toshiba laptop (dual boot with Vista) has one of these internal USB
Wireless devices with the RTL8187B chipset. In the 7.x version of Ubuntu, I
tried all the published hacks to get it working but could not get wpa/wpa2 to
work.
When I installed 8.10, it detected my D-Link dir-615 (WPA2) and connected
without a fuss. Later, I used the "5.5m hack" described previously and have
since had a solid connection in different parts of the house without any drops.
Therefore, I was surprised when connecting at Starbucks (ATT Wifi no
encryption) that the signal kept dropping every few minutes and would require
either disabling/enabling Network Manager applet or reboot, as described by
other posters. Vista shows strong signal and never drops.
I've looked at the relevant system log messages, have done google searches
etc... but cannot come up with anything.
