I have not found any pattern yet. This is a compaq nc6000 laptop, so I can only have a console cable plugged in some of the time. Unfortunately, so far, no crash has happened while the console cable is plugged in. It is not easy to reproduce. So far it happens about twice a week. Does ubuntu support kexec as a way of diagnosing these sorts of hard hangs.
